We are a non-profit organization of scientists and STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Medicine) professionals dedicated to funding grass-roots research and higher education. Our goal is to achieve a sustainable future by conducting research, engaging with local communities, diversifying the sciences, and providing opportunities for underrepresented groups and individuals. We seek to cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration and create a space for scientists to examine the world separate from self-interest groups and for-profit organizations. We believe in a free commerce of ideas that is detached from the monetization of intellectual property and that the sharing of knowledge and information is a fundamental tenet of science paramount to mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable future for all.

A Changing Earth

Our planet is changing in unprecedented ways. The scale and reach of anthropogenic climate change poses a threat to every living thing on Earth, calling for a global initiative to create a sustainable future for all.

Sea Level Rise

Globally, sea levels are rising at an average rate of 3.3 mm (0.13 in) per year due to melting glaciers, ice sheets, and the thermal expansion of seawater as sea surface temperatures increase (NASA, 2019). Our oceans absorb more than 90% of the atmospheric heat produced by human activity (NOAA, 2019).

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that traps heat. CO2 levels within the atmosphere have been increasing primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels since the start of the industrial revolution. Global CO2 levels are currently increasing at a faster rate than the previous ~60 million years. Current atmospheric levels of COare just over 410 ppm (NASA, 2019).

Global Temperature

Global surface temperatures have increased by about 0.7–0.9° Celsius (1.3–1.6° Fahrenheit) per century since the turn of the 20th Century. The rate of warming has nearly doubled since 1975, with the 10 warmest years on record all occurring since 1998 (NOAA, 2019).

Decentralizing Science. Funding Opportunity.

Our goal is to provide scientists with direct access to, and full control of, research funding. Currently, many institutions and for-profit organizations retain a majority share of research funding to enhance their own agendas and resources. Climate Aware prioritizes the science by trusting STEMM professionals to determine how funding should be utilized to meet their research needs. This allows our scientists to realize the full potential of awarded and donated funds to effectively decentralize science from the control and influence of large institutions.

In addition, Climate Aware seeks to patch the leaky academic pipeline by recruiting, training, and retaining the next generation of scientists. We recognize the lack of diversity within STEMM and look to give opportunity to underrepresented, economically disadvantaged, and marginalized groups/individuals. Climate Aware will work to award scholarships and mentor students to ensure their future success in STEMM.
